Kolkata, July 11 (NationPress) A local Trinamool Congress leader was brutally murdered on a road in Bhangar, located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
The tragic event occurred late Thursday night, claiming the life of Rezzak Khan, who was recognized in the community as a close ally of Trinamool Congress legislator Saokat Molla from the Canning (East) Assembly constituency.
According to eyewitnesses, unidentified assailants shot Khan at close range while he was on his way home. Following this, he was brutally attacked with sharp weapons multiple times.
After the attackers fled the scene, locals rushed him to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, the medical staff pronounced him dead on arrival.
Historically, the Bhangar region has been infamous for intense political violence and assassinations. Recently, it was placed under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Police to improve law enforcement and order.
However, this measure has not significantly altered the situation on the ground, as reports of political conflicts continue to emerge.
The representative for Bhangar, Nawsad Siddique, is the only member of the All India Secular Front (AISF) in the West Bengal Assembly.
Since the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, the primary political rivals in Bhangar have been the Trinamool Congress and the AISF.
A political battle has erupted following the murder of Rezzak Khan. Saokat Mollah has alleged that Nawsad Siddique orchestrated the murder, citing Khan’s organizational skills and local popularity as a threat to the AISF.
In response, Siddique has asserted that the murder stemmed from internal divisions within the Trinamool Congress in Bhangar and denied any involvement from his party.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma visited the scene and announced that an investigation is underway, but no further details could be disclosed at this time.
The body of the deceased leader has been sent for a post-mortem examination, as confirmed by the commissioner.
