Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 8 (NationPress) A youth leader from the Trinamool Congress has been accused of intimidating a Block Development Officer (BDO) over disputes regarding various government contracts and the distribution of funds for housing initiatives. This incident unfolded during a meeting on Wednesday in the Domkal block of West Bengal's Murshidabad district, and a video capturing the altercation has since gone viral.
As tensions escalated, police were summoned, who also reportedly faced harassment.
According to police reports, a gathering of the Panchayat Samiti's Standing Committee (Public Works) took place at the Domkal BDO office on Wednesday morning, where the swift execution of government projects was on the agenda. Towards the meeting's conclusion, Panchayat Samiti president Sahana Biswas and the Public Works committee chairman, Mehboob Hasan, requested BDO Shankhadeep Ghosh to provide details regarding several road tenders and housing scheme allocations.
The BDO responded that he could not disclose all the information due to governmental regulations. During this exchange, Mehboob Hasan allegedly rose from his seat and attempted to assault the BDO. This tense moment has been widely circulated on social media.
Following this, the BDO's office was reportedly encircled by Trinamool Congress supporters, and it is claimed that the BDO faced verbal insults. Even after the arrival of officers from the Domkal police station, the situation remained volatile, with the Trinamool leader seen aggressively approaching the police. Eventually, law enforcement managed to restore order.
Mehboob Hasan later stated, "During the standing committee meeting, we urged the BDO to hasten the execution of housing and other projects. Instead of a response, he made an inappropriate comment. As a government official, he must respect boundaries set by elected representatives."
In response, BDO Shankhadeep remarked, "An unfortunate incident has transpired. This matter is administrative, and I have notified the administration and senior officials. Appropriate actions will be taken as per their guidance."
