West Bengal Police Takes Action Against TMC Over Election Campaign Obstruction
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 4 (NationPress) The West Bengal Police has launched disciplinary proceedings against the IC of Berhampore and has taken legal action against four members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for unlawful obstruction during Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's election campaign. This announcement was made by a Bengal Police official on Saturday evening.
The actions followed escalating tensions in Berhampore, located in the Murshidabad district, on Saturday morning as the Congress party commenced its election campaign.
Adhir Chowdhury, the Congress candidate for the constituency, was actively campaigning alongside his supporters. He reportedly encountered significant resistance from TMC members upon entering ward number 19 of the city.
The senior Congress member and former MP stated, “The Trinamool Congress is systematically obstructing our campaign efforts. Their fear of the election outcomes has driven them to violence and intimidation.”
In response to the allegations, local TMC councillor Bhishmadev Karmakar refuted such claims, labeling Chowdhury a traitor who is inciting chaos by involving outsiders. He asserted that local residents have protested against him.
It is claimed that Chowdhury was hindered from campaigning by TMC activists as he entered ward number 19 with his team. Slogans such as “go back” and “joy bangla” were shouted at him, resulting in a clash between the supporters of both parties, prompting police intervention to restore order.
Local TMC leadership accused Chowdhury of attempting to disrupt peace and order by bringing in miscreants from outside the area. Bhishmadev remarked, “Our procession was ongoing when Congress workers attempted to attack us. If Adhir believes he can regain his lost influence by bringing in outsiders, he is mistaken. The local populace does not support him.”
Both political factions are expected to lodge complaints with the Election Commission following these events.
Notably, Chowdhury was also met with protests the previous night, where a group of TMC members chanted “go back” slogans upon seeing him. This incident occurred on Abdus Samad Road in Berhampore.
A district Congress leader was hospitalized due to illness, and Chowdhury visited him. Upon his return, TMC workers allegedly shouted “go back” at him.
District Congress spokesperson Jayanta Das commented, “The Trinamool will secure third place in the elections. They are aware of their impending defeat, which is why they resort to such tactics.”
As a consequence of the earlier incident, the West Bengal Police has initiated disciplinary measures against the IC of Berhampore and commenced legal actions against the four accused TMC members for their unlawful actions during the campaign.
