Adhir Chowdhury's Security Enhanced Amidst Trinamool Protests Ahead of Bengal Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 8 (NationPress) The security detail for Adhir Chowdhury, the Congress candidate representing the Baharampur constituency, has been significantly bolstered ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, as confirmed by a government insider on Wednesday.
In addition to the existing personnel, female security officers will also be part of his team, with five additional members joining on Tuesday.
This decision follows a sequence of protests directed at Chowdhury by a faction of Trinamool Congress workers during his campaign efforts in the Murshidabad district.
Previously, Adhir Chowdhury was assigned 'Y Plus' central security while serving as an MP, accompanied by five security personnel. Although he lost the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the central government maintained his security detail. With this latest enhancement, the count of 'Y Plus' personnel has been raised from five to ten, in addition to two state police constables assigned for his protection.
Concerns have been voiced regarding the provision of central security to a leader no longer in Parliament. During a meeting in Jalangi of Murshidabad on Monday, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee alleged that there exists a hidden agreement between Chowdhury and the central government regarding his security.
In the midst of this scrutiny, his security detail has been expanded.
A close associate of Chowdhury expressed that he has been encountering significant hurdles while campaigning for the Assembly elections. "Go back" chants have been directed at him, and women have also been protesting at various locations. It appears that his security increase is a response to these incidents, noted the associate.
On Sunday morning, Chowdhury was met with "go back" chants from Trinamool Congress members in three separate areas of Berhampore. For the majority of his campaigning, he has opted to walk, engaging with constituents and touring the area. The police and central forces present managed to control the situation.
A similar protest occurred on Saturday during his foot campaign. In light of these events, the West Bengal Police took disciplinary measures against the Berhampore IC and initiated legal action against four Trinamool Congress members for disrupting Chowdhury's election campaign.
