Tensions Rise in Bengal's Berhampore as Congress's Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Faces TMC Resistance
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 4 (NationPress) Tensions flared in Berhampore, West Bengal, on Saturday morning as Congress candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury reportedly encountered physical obstructions from workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) while campaigning for the elections.
Chowdhury, who is vying for the Berhampore assembly seat in Murshidabad district, was actively campaigning when he allegedly met resistance in Ward No. 19 of the city.
The seasoned Congress leader and former MP stated, “The Trinamool Congress is deliberately creating hurdles in our campaign. They fear the electoral outcome, which is why they have resorted to violence and intimidation.”
The atmosphere became charged as slogans like “go back” and “Joy Bangla” were directed at Chowdhury. Reports indicate that a scuffle ensued between the supporters of both parties, prompting police intervention to restore order.
However, local TMC councillor Bhishmadev Karmakar dismissed these claims, alleging that Chowdhury instigated the unrest.
“He is a traitor. He is inciting chaos by bringing in outsiders. The local populace has protested against him,” Karmakar asserted.
TMC representatives further accused Chowdhury of attempting to disrupt peace in the region, claiming he brought miscreants from outside, escalating tensions.
Karmakar elaborated, “Our procession was ongoing when Congress supporters attempted to attack us. If Adhir Chowdhury believes he can regain lost support by introducing outsiders, he is mistaken. The local community does not want him.”
Both political factions are anticipated to file complaints with the Election Commission regarding this incident.
This confrontation follows a similar incident on Friday night along Abdus Samad Road, where TMC supporters allegedly chanted “go back” as Chowdhury departed after visiting an ailing district Congress leader at a nursing home.
District Congress spokesperson Jayanta Das commented, “The TMC will secure the third position in the elections. They are resorting to these tactics knowing they are destined for defeat.”
The Congress party is contesting independently in all 294 assembly seats in the Bengal elections, concluding its prior alliance with the Left Front.
The party recently released its inaugural list of 284 candidates, which includes senior leader Chowdhury from the Berhampore constituency.
