New Delhi/Agartala, Aug 20 (NationPress) A ten-member BJP delegation from Tripura, spearheaded by state President Rajib Bhattacharjee, engaged in extensive discussions with central leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, in New Delhi to formulate strategies aimed at bolstering the party’s organizational presence among the tribal communities.

A representative from the BJP noted that the meeting with Home Minister Shah took place on Tuesday, with additional meetings scheduled with other central leaders on Wednesday and Thursday.

During the talks with HM Shah, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, along with BJP’s Northeast in-charge and National Spokesperson Sambit Patra, also participated.

Prominent tribal leader and Tripura’s Industry and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, who was part of the delegation, mentioned that discussions during Wednesday’s meeting included both tribal development in the state and broader developmental issues.

BJP State General Secretary Bipin Debbarma highlighted that the dialogue with the Union Home Minister focused on strategies to enhance the party’s foothold among the tribal population, which accounts for one-third of Tripura’s more than four million residents.

Other tribal leaders in the delegation included Bikash Debbarma, the state’s Tribal Welfare Minister, former Lok Sabha member Rebati Tripura, and MLA Rama Pada Jamatia.

Last week, a six-member group of BJP tribal leaders from Tripura convened with the party’s National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh in New Delhi to discuss organizational matters pertinent to the tribal populace.

A BJP leader in Agartala stated that the tribal leaders, led by Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, deliberated on the upcoming election for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which is set to take place early next year.

The 30-member TTAADC holds significant political importance and is currently administered by the BJP’s ally, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP).

The ruling BJP is actively working to fortify its organizational base within the TTAADC, which governs two-thirds of Tripura's 10,491 square kilometers and is home to over 1.2 million residents, with around 84% being tribal.

To reduce reliance on tribal-centric parties and their allies, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) and the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), the BJP has intensified efforts to solidify its presence in tribal areas of Tripura.

Tribal communities play a crucial role in the electoral landscape of Tripura.

Earlier this month, the BJP government raised the monthly honorarium for tribal community leaders from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 in an effort to garner support from the tribal populace.

Amidst the BJP's intensified organizational activities in tribal regions, TMP workers have reportedly attacked BJP functionaries on two occasions in Khowai and West Tripura districts last month, resulting in injuries to at least ten individuals.

Point of View

It’s crucial to recognize the ongoing efforts by the BJP to reinforce its tribal base in Tripura. The party's proactive approach through dialogue with central leaders showcases its understanding of the significant role that tribal communities play in the state's political arena.
