Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday, 6 July inaugurated the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Town Hall in Agartala, stating that living by Mukherjee's philosophy would instil in future generations the values of honesty, duty, self-sacrifice and patriotism — qualities he described as foundational to a strong, united and progressive India.

Foundation Stone and Bronze Statue

Before the main ceremony, Chief Minister Saha unveiled a plaque marking the laying of the foundation stone for a 13-foot-high bronze statue of Mukherjee on the Town Hall premises, and performed the Bhoomi Puja. He described the initiative as more than a construction project, calling it a tribute to the nation's history, heritage and core values. According to Saha, the statue will help future generations understand Mukherjee's life, contributions and ideals, serving as a lasting symbol of patriotism and selfless public service.

What the Chief Minister Said

Saha described Mukherjee as a great patriot, eminent educationist, distinguished parliamentarian and visionary statesman who made remarkable contributions to education, society, culture and national life at a young age. He said Mukherjee remained steadfast in safeguarding the unity, integrity and national cohesion of India throughout his public life.

Referring also to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Saha said both leaders taught the nation the true meaning of selfless service and dedication. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking the country forward by drawing inspiration from the life philosophy and ideals of such national leaders.

Mayor's Announcements

Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder called the occasion historic and said Mukherjee's philosophy would continue to inspire dedication, commitment and sacrifice in public service. He noted that the late leader devoted his life to building a united India beyond barriers of caste, religion and colour.

Majumder announced that the bronze statue is expected to be completed within the next three to four months. He also revealed plans to establish a paperless civil hospital in Agartala's Kashari Patti area, to be named after Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.

Programme Highlights

The event was attended by several BJP MLAs and senior officials. As part of the anniversary celebrations, a documentary on Mukherjee's life, vision and contributions was screened, and a photo exhibition showcasing significant milestones from his public career was organised at the Town Hall. This comes amid a broader national effort by the Bharatiya Janata Party to commemorate leaders of the Jana Sangh tradition as part of its ideological heritage calendar.
