Agartala, Sep 10 (NationPress) The government of Tripura has embarked on a quest to secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the Agar tree. This announcement was made by the state’s Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, during a meeting with representatives from the All Tripura Agar Wood Association.

Minister Nath revealed that the state has submitted a formal proposal to the central authorities for the GI tag concerning the Tripura Agar tree.

The Tripura government introduced the Agar Wood Policy in 2021, which has significantly boosted the Agar industry within the state.

Nath indicated that both the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department and the Forest Department are planning to create Agar nurseries and provide saplings to the public at no cost.

He highlighted the increasing demand for Agar both locally and nationally, mentioning the government’s efforts to incorporate Agar into agro-forestry for enhanced revenue generation.

Notably, Agar cultivation in Kadamtala under the North Tripura District resulted in substantial GST revenue last year, benefiting the state’s finances.

“Farmers are now eager to cultivate Agar trees. In the upcoming cabinet meeting, I plan to discuss strategies for boosting Agar cultivation. The previous administration did little to support Agar development. Our government established the Tripura Agar Wood Policy in 2021, recognizing the global reputation of Tripura Agar,” the Minister stated.

Last year, sales of Agar chips and oil reached an impressive Rs 25 crore.

“Similar to Kadamtala, farmers in other districts are also keen on Agar cultivation. Several major companies are collaborating with us in the Agar sector. The forest and agriculture departments are actively working to include Agar in agroforestry and setting up nurseries for free sapling distribution. The Chief Minister, Manik Saha, is also supportive of this initiative,” Nath added.
