Agartala, Sep 10 (NationPress) In a significant move, the government of Tripura is actively working towards securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the Agar tree, as announced by the state's Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Wednesday.
During a meeting with representatives from the All Tripura Agar Wood Association, the Minister revealed that the state has submitted a proposal to the central authority for the GI tag specific to the Tripura Agar tree.
Since adopting the Agar Wood Policy in 2021, the state has seen a remarkable growth in the Agar industry.
Nath mentioned that the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department, alongside the Forest Department, is planning to establish Agar nurseries under an agro-forestry framework and intends to distribute saplings free of charge to the public.
The Minister emphasized that the demand for Agar is robust both locally and nationally, and the government aims to integrate Agar into agro-forestry to boost revenue.
He highlighted that last year, Agar cultivation in Kadamtala, located in the North Tripura District, yielded notable GST revenues that benefited the state.
“Farmers are increasingly expressing interest in Agar cultivation. In our upcoming cabinet meeting, I will discuss strategies to enhance Agar production. The previous administration neglected Agar cultivation, but our government has revitalized it with the Tripura Agar Wood Policy. The fame of Tripura Agar is recognized globally,” the Minister stated.
Additionally, he mentioned that Agar chips and oil sales reached a remarkable Rs 25 crore last year.
“Like in Kadamtala, farmers from various districts are now eager to cultivate Agar. Several major companies have shown interest in collaborating with us on Agar cultivation. The forest and agriculture departments are exploring the inclusion of Agar in agroforestry and setting up nurseries to distribute saplings at no cost. Chief Minister Manik Saha is also fully supportive of this initiative,” the Minister concluded.
