Agartala, Oct 10 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha, officially launched the remarkable Rs 33.08 crore Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) College Lake Rejuvenation Project, which is backed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The Chief Executive Officer of Agartala Smart City Ltd, Shailesh Kumar Yadav, stated that the initiative, which commenced in 2023, has revitalized a previously deteriorated, crime-ridden area into a lively 31-acre public green zone, now recognized as the largest green public space in Tripura.
Previously, this location was notorious for anti-social behavior, including criminal activities, with some instances involving murder victims being discovered in the vicinity.
Yadav explained that the project focused solely on essential construction work while ensuring the preservation of water resources.
The revamped area now features ample seating and various public amenities.
To guarantee public safety, the site is monitored continuously, with 60 CCTV cameras linked to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).
Access to the lake is controlled, and entry passes are mandatory. Additionally, provisions have been made in the expansive 31-acre green space to attract and support migratory birds.
Yadav further emphasized that the area's design reflects both tribal and non-tribal cultural and religious traditions, showcasing the state’s rich heritage.
Abhishek Singh, Secretary of the Urban Development Department, highlighted that the revitalized lake complex features a 3-km walking circuit surrounded by lush greenery, enriched by over 70,000 plants that enhance the ecosystem and improve air quality and biodiversity. Singh, who also chairs Agartala Smart City Ltd, mentioned that several other projects, such as the Haora River Front Development Project, are in progress under the Smart City initiative.
Officials noted a significant increase in oxygen levels in the lake water following these revitalization measures.
Dipak Majumder, Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation, shared that the municipal authority has transformed and rejuvenated 25 abandoned ponds at a cost of Rs 106 crore.
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Saha remarked that this project exemplifies a model of sustainable urban rejuvenation that harmonizes ecological preservation with community recreation.
The lake area now provides a variety of public amenities, including walking paths, yoga zones, and water sports facilities, alongside spaces that highlight cultural and religious narratives reflective of Tripura’s diverse heritage.
In addition to its environmental and recreational advantages, the initiative has generated employment opportunities for locals through maintenance, tourism, and small-scale business initiatives associated with the lake complex.
