Agartala, March 24 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha, announced on Monday that the overall conviction rate for various cases in the state has risen by 21 percent in the last three years.

During the ongoing budget session of the Tripura assembly, while addressing the MLAs, the Chief Minister revealed that as of 2024, the conviction rate in criminal cases stands at 29.80 percent.

Saha, who also serves as the Home Minister, indicated that to facilitate the effective application of three newly implemented criminal laws, the state government will establish Deputy Director of Prosecution offices in all eight districts of Tripura.

The three new criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—were enacted last year and will replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act starting July 1 this year.

The Chief Minister shared that the total number of criminal cases registered in the state was 4,532 in 2022, 5,002 in 2023, and 4,033 in 2024.

He also noted that charge sheets were filed in 3,548 cases in 2022, 3,970 cases in 2023, and 2,910 cases in 2024.

Interestingly, there were 650 convictions in 2022, 640 in 2023, and 811 in 2024, leading to the sentencing of 1,596 offenders in 2024.

“The conviction rate has consistently increased, showing a 21 percent rise in 2024 compared to 2022. To ensure strict prosecution measures, the three new criminal laws—BNS, BNSS, and BSA—were introduced. A recent high-level meeting in Guwahati, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressed Tripura-specific issues regarding the implementation of these laws,” he stated.

Saha mentioned that to guarantee the effective execution of this new legal framework, the state government has resolved to set up Deputy Director of Prosecution offices across all eight districts of Tripura.

Moreover, around 70 new positions have been created across various categories, including Deputy Director, Assistant Director, and Superintendent Officers, to enhance the prosecution process.

“Our goal is to implement the prosecution process efficiently, which has not been adequately addressed in the past. The government is dedicated to reinforcing law enforcement and delivering justice to the populace,” he concluded.
