Agartala, Feb 28 (NationPress) Tripura has experienced an astonishing 332% growth in the area dedicated to floriculture in just seven years, leading to increased earnings for farmers as the state government amplifies its efforts to support this sector, stated Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Saturday.
The Minister remarked that since the 2018-19 financial year, the cultivation of flowers in the state has significantly broadened due to heightened demand and improved price realizations in local markets.
He pointed out that floriculture has developed into a highly lucrative sector, providing farmers a chance to diversify away from traditional crops.
In discussing India’s role in global agriculture, he noted that the nation ranks second in flower cultivation and has emerged as a frontrunner in paddy production.
Nath stressed that although floriculture cannot be practiced universally, it presents one of the highest income potentials among agricultural endeavors.
“Previously, numerous farmers in regions like Bishalgarh were focused on vegetable farming. Now, they are transitioning to flower cultivation for better financial returns. Our government aims to empower individuals and create employment opportunities at the grassroots level. Flowers serve not just for decoration but also for producing natural colors for Holi, medicines, and perfumes. The demand remains consistently robust,” Nath explained.
The Minister highlighted that Tripura’s fertile soil, sufficient rainfall, and subtropical climate create ideal conditions for a diverse range of flower cultivation.
Traditional blooms like marigold, gladiolus, and rose continue to dominate the conventional floriculture market, with their cultivated area expanding by 60% since 2018-19.
Simultaneously, Tripura has made notable advancements in high-tech floriculture. Crops such as anthurium, orchid, and gerbera are now flourishing under protected cultivation, with the area designated for high-tech floriculture seeing a 124% increase during this timeframe.
The Minister reported that farmers cultivating flowers on 200 square meters of land are realizing an average monthly profit of over Rs 10,000. The strong local demand guarantees that growers receive favorable prices.
To bolster this sector, the state government has set up an arcadium and a hardening centre, both measuring 400 sq m, at the Badharghat garden in the West Tripura district.
Special initiatives are underway to encourage high-quality flower cultivation in underutilized fields, ensuring timely access to quality planting materials for farmers at reasonable rates.
The newly launched facility is designated as the Centre of Floriculture and Landscaping, with an investment of Rs 4.50 crore for its construction, supported by the Public Works Department.
Furthermore, a Centre of Excellence on Flowers is in development at Lembuchara, covering 65 kani of land, through a collaborative effort between the Centre and the state government. This initiative will focus on cultivating orchids, anthurium, gerbera, rose, chrysanthemum, and various ornamental leafy plants, along with providing training and supplying high-quality seedlings to farmers at competitive prices.
