Bengaluru, July 17 (NationPress) The National President of BJP Yuva Morcha and MP Tejasvi Surya has officially extended an invitation to Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, D. K. Shivakumar, who also oversees Bengaluru's development, for an open discussion and public debate about the controversial Bengaluru tunnel project.

Surya argues that this project primarily serves the interests of affluent car owners and will not alleviate the traffic congestion plaguing Bengaluru.

In response to Surya's criticisms, the Karnataka Congress took to social media platform X, stating, "This isn’t about political credit. It’s about 'Brand Bengaluru', a city that requires cooperation between the state and the Centre. We are open to public audits, technical evaluations, and dialogue. However, we must not hinder progress by dismissing every transformative initiative as wasteful. Citizens deserve effective implementation, not divisive rhetoric."

Surya, addressing this statement, said, "If you genuinely welcome technical evaluation and public dialogue regarding this tunnel project, I suggest we have an open conversation with Dy CM Shivakumar, who is leading this initiative. You can determine the time and venue."

"Engaging in a constructive discussion about the pros and cons is undoubtedly advantageous. I await your response. Thank you," he added.

"Some advocates for Bengaluru's tunnel project reference Singapore as a model. However, even Singapore abandoned similar large-scale tunnel proposals after recognizing their prohibitive costs, unsustainability, and inefficiency in reducing congestion. Avoid cherry-picking examples; let’s learn from Singapore's revisions as well," Surya emphasized.

He further questioned Dy CM Shivakumar, "Why repeat the errors that others have moved away from?"

"The BJP will vigorously oppose this tunnel project, which appears to be a misuse of public funds disguised as development," asserted the Bengaluru South MP.

He elaborated, "This 18-kilometer tunnel project for Bengaluru, estimated at Rs 18,500 crore, is designed solely for cars traveling from Hebbal to Dairy Circle. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and feasibility assessment are fraught with discrepancies and irregularities," Surya contended.

Reports indicate that the tunnel can accommodate 600–1,600 individuals per hour, and if motorcycles and scooters are permitted, it could support approximately 7,500 users per hour. However, currently, the plan does not allow access for buses, rickshaws, or two-wheelers.

Surya has raised concerns about the project, suggesting that a Metro system could transport 25,000 people per hour instead.

“Do we prefer a project that caters only to car owners or a metro system that can serve 25,000 individuals per hour?” Surya questioned.

The Deputy Chief Minister has indicated that a toll will be imposed on the tunnel, with the DPR specifying a one-way toll fee of Rs 660. “How many residents of Bengaluru can afford to pay Rs 660 daily for commuting?” he queried.

“This is a tunnel for the affluent residents of Sadashivanagar, Dollar’s Colony, and 4th Block Koramangala. It appears custom-made to facilitate D.K. Shivakumar and his close associates’ travel to their residences in Koramangala,” Surya alleged.

Surya concluded, “The BJP opposes the tunnel road project. We will strive to protect every single rupee of the public's money.”
