“This initiative will create better avenues for innovation, global promotion, and value addition in turmeric production, while fortifying the supply chains, benefiting both farmers and consumers,” the Prime Minister elaborated.

India commands over 62 percent of the global turmeric trade. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, around 1.62 lakh tonnes of turmeric and its products, valued at $226.5 million, were exported.

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, expressed his delight in inaugurating the National Turmeric Board on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.

“We aim to enhance production in response to the rising global popularity of turmeric as a kitchen staple and wellness product,” the Union Minister announced on X.

“Our objective is to fortify the infrastructure, technologies, and skills associated with the turmeric value chain while preserving and promoting our ancient knowledge of this golden spice to further benefit our farmers, exporters, and the economy,” Goyal stressed.

The Board will also focus on raising awareness about the essential and medicinal properties of turmeric, strategies to enhance its yield, and improving logistics and supply chains to penetrate new markets. It will also ensure quality and safety standards for turmeric production and exports.

In FY 2023-24, approximately 3.05 lakh hectares were under turmeric cultivation in India, yielding 10.74 lakh tonnes. India accounted for over 70 percent of global turmeric production, with 30 varieties cultivated in the country.
