Chennai, March 14 (NationPress) The TVK, established by Tamil superstar Vijay, is poised to hold its general council meeting in Chennai on March 28.
As per party insiders, around 23 resolutions are anticipated to be adopted, many of which will vehemently condemn the strategies of both the BJP-led Central government and the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay has recently amplified his opposition to these parties, and the forthcoming meeting is likely to heighten his criticisms further. His change in stance was evident in a video message launched on Women’s Day, where he directly targeted the DMK government for the first time -- a notable shift from his earlier strategy of steering clear of explicit political references. This alteration in approach has garnered positive feedback within the party, and Vijay is expected to escalate his attacks on both the DMK and BJP during his address at the general council meeting.
In addition to the general council assembly, TVK is also gearing up to conduct a booth committee conference shortly as part of its extensive political strategy.
Vijay officially inaugurated the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on February 2, 2024, framing it as a movement against corruption and divisive politics. Although he opted not to participate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he has confirmed that TVK will compete in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
On August 22, 2024, Vijay unveiled the party’s flag and anthem at TVK’s headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai. This was succeeded by the party’s inaugural political conference on October 27, 2024, in Vikravandi, Villupuram district, which attracted an estimated turnout of three lakh individuals, causing significant traffic disruptions in Vikravandi and Mundiyampakkam, leading authorities to reroute traffic on the Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway.
During the Vikravandi conference, Vijay adopted a strong position against both the DMK and BJP. He labeled the BJP as his ideological foe and the DMK as his political rival, accusing the DMK of being a family-run party exploiting the Dravidian identity for personal gain, while condemning the BJP for its divisive political tactics.
In response, the DMK dismissed Vijay's criticisms, alleging he was indirectly endorsing the BJP, referring to TVK as the “C team” of the saffron party.
Vijay’s influence in Tamil Nadu politics has been steadily increasing, especially after his fan club, All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (AITVMI), won 115 out of the 169 seats contested in the 2021 Tamil Nadu local body elections. This was in stark contrast to Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) and Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), which failed to secure any positions.
Vijay has also clarified that TVK will only align with parties that acknowledge his leadership. Political analysts perceive this stance as a clear indication of his aspirations for the Chief Minister’s post in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
