Is TVK Going Solo in the 2026 TN Assembly Polls with Vijay as CM Candidate?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Nov 5 (NationPress) Concluding weeks of intense political discussions, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) declared on Wednesday its intent to independently participate in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with its founder and actor Vijay designated as the party's Chief Ministerial candidate.
This pivotal announcement was made during a special general council meeting convened at a private venue in Mamallapuram.
Chaired by Vijay, the meeting saw the attendance of over 2,000 general council members, party district heads, and officials from across the state.
The session commenced with a solemn moment of silence to honor the 41 individuals who tragically lost their lives in the Karur stampede during Vijay's rally on September 27.
This unfortunate incident, which loomed over the party's activities, was recognized as a “painful lesson” that reinforced TVK's commitment to enhance safety protocols for future public gatherings.
During this meeting, the council adopted 12 resolutions that will shape the political and policy framework for the upcoming elections.
Among the resolutions, a significant one urged the Election Commission of India to suspend the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, claiming that this process could disenfranchise eligible voters.
The TVK criticized both the DMK government in the state and the BJP-led Union government for their “failure to protect Tamil interests”, especially concerning the repeated detentions of fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Another resolution denounced what it termed the “shocking deterioration” of law and order in Tamil Nadu, citing the Coimbatore college student sexual assault case as a clear indication of the state’s “failure” to ensure the safety of women.
The council also expressed alarm over the challenges faced by delta farmers due to delays in paddy procurement and the sprouting of harvested crops, and criticized the government's perceived inaction regarding encroachments on wetlands. Additionally, it called for a White Paper on industrial investments to ensure transparency in job creation and infrastructure development.
The resolutions emphasized that decisions regarding electoral alliances would solely be determined by Vijay and that the party would lead its own front in the 2026 elections. Concurrently, police removed party banners and limited flag displays around the venue, citing security issues.
