Two Nationals from Myanmar Arrested in Mizoram with Large Cache of Foreign Currency

Aizawl, Jan 12 (NationPress) The Assam Rifles along with the Mizoram Police have detained two individuals from Myanmar who were involved in an attempt to smuggle a considerable sum of foreign currency, equivalent to more than Rs 1.48 crore in Mizoram’s Siaha District, officials disclosed on Sunday.
According to a spokesperson from the defense, the Assam Rifles, undaunted by the difficult terrain, executed continuous area domination patrols and set up several Mobile Vehicle Check Posts (MVCPs) in strategically significant areas. Their relentless efforts culminated in the apprehension of the two suspects from whom the foreign currency was seized.
In addition, two mobile phones and a Burmese motorcycle were confiscated from their possession.
The seized assets alongside the detained individuals have been transferred to the police for further inquiry. This operation underscores the steadfast commitment of the Assam Rifles to combat illegal cross-border activities, as emphasized by the spokesperson.
In an unrelated incident, the Assam Rifles also confiscated heroin valued at Rs 97.90 lakh and arrested a man named Laltanpuia, aged 35, who is from Tlangsam village located in the border Champhai district.
The ongoing smuggling of illicit goods is a significant concern for both Mizoram and India, as noted in an official statement.
The Assam Rifles, known as the “Sentinels of Northeast”, have intensified their operations against illegal smuggling and are making concerted efforts to apprehend the masterminds behind the trafficking of contraband in Mizoram.
On Saturday, the force conducted a session on 'Anti Drug Awareness' in Laki village within Siaha district, which saw participation from 35 local residents and 9 personnel from the Assam Rifles.
The aim of this gathering was to enlighten the local populace, particularly the youth, about the perils of drug addiction and the significance of maintaining a drug-free lifestyle for both personal health and community wellness, according to the spokesperson.
The session was directed by officers from the Assam Rifles, who shared comprehensive insights on various types of drugs, their detrimental effects on both physical and mental health, as well as prevention strategies. The initiative was well-received by attendees, who commendably acknowledged the Assam Rifles for organizing such a pivotal event. Numerous participants expressed their resolve to promote awareness and aid in the battle against drugs, the spokesperson remarked.
