New Delhi, May 22 (NationPress) The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has initiated a probe into the operations of Ola and Rapido to investigate if these cab-hailing platforms have engaged in the unethical practice of soliciting advance tips from consumers for enhanced service speed. This concern was first raised by Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi regarding Uber, which has already received a formal notice on the matter.
"The CCPA is extending its inquiry to other apps such as Ola and Rapido; they will also face notices if found participating in similar practices," Minister Joshi stated on Thursday via a social media update.
"The concept of 'Advance Tip' is extremely troubling," he emphasized.
"Compelling or pressuring customers to provide a tip in advance for expedited service is both unethical and exploitative. Tips should be a gesture of gratitude, not a requirement, and must only be given after the service has been completed," he added.
"Acknowledging this issue, I instructed the CCPA to carry out an investigation. Today, the authority has issued a notice to Uber, requesting an explanation from the platform," the Minister further explained.
Minister Joshi also highlighted the necessity for fairness, transparency, and accountability in consumer relations.
When a user books a ride through the Uber application, they are prompted to provide a tip of Rs 50, Rs 75, or Rs 100 to potentially secure quicker service. The app shows a message that states: “Add a tip for speedier pickup. If you leave a gratuity, the driver may be more inclined to accept the ride.” It also warns, “If you add a tip now, you can’t change it later,” confirming that drivers will receive the complete tip amount.
Earlier in January, the CCPA issued notices to both Uber and Ola regarding allegations that the companies charged different prices for the same rides based on whether the booking was made via an Android or iPhone.
However, the companies have refuted claims that their pricing varies depending on the type of mobile device used for booking a ride.
