Mumbai, Nov 17 (NationPress) In a significant turn of events, the government of Maharashtra has reinstated former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray as the head of the Balasaheb Thackeray National Memorial Trust. This move comes as a considerable blow to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, especially with the impending Mumbai civic body elections on the horizon.
The decision was sanctioned by the MahaYuti government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, despite fierce opposition from Shinde's camp, which interpreted it as a clear indication of the Bharatiya Janata Party's dominance over governance and alliance operations.
In response to the reappointment, Fadnavis stated, "We will steadfastly adhere to the principles set forth by the esteemed Shiv Sena Chief, Hindu Hruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray."
Former Mayor and Shiv Sena-UBT leader Kishori Pednekar praised the government's decision, asserting it would invigorate party spirit ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
“Despite our ideological differences, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis exemplifies civility. We embrace this decision and are pleased,” she remarked.
This marks Uddhav Thackeray's return to the position after stepping down in 2019 when he assumed the Chief Minister role. The reappointment coincides with the 13th death anniversary of his father, Balasaheb Thackeray, the founder of Shiv Sena.
Uddhav had left the Chief Minister's office following a split in the party due to the Eknath Shinde revolt in 2022. The chairmanship remained unfilled since the Shinde-led MahaYuti government took power in June 2022.
Shinde Sena leader Ramdas Kadam had previously advocated for Uddhav's removal.
This decision unfolds amid an intense rivalry between the Shinde faction and Shiv Sena-UBT, as both vie for control in the forthcoming BMC elections and seek to appeal to the Marathi Manoos, a crucial voter base for both groups.
The Shinde camp has already attracted several former corporators from the UBT. Uddhav Thackeray is strategizing to counter the Shinde faction and the MahaYuti as they prepare for the civic elections, in collaboration with his cousin, MNS chief Raj Thackeray.
Other notable appointments to the Trust include former minister and senior UBT leader Subhash Desai, former minister Aaditya Thackeray, BJP legislator Parag Alavani, and Shiv Sena deputy leader Shishir Shinde.
The chief secretary, two urban development secretaries, the law and judiciary secretary, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner will serve as ex officio members. The government plans to name two additional members later.
Established in 2016, the Trust was first chaired by Uddhav Thackeray after the Mayor’s Bungalow at Shivaji Park was selected as the site for the Balasaheb Thackeray National Memorial. He resigned from this position in 2019 upon becoming Chief Minister.
