Chandigarh, April 3 (NationPress) Renowned cardiologist and electrophysiologist Prof Dhiraj Gupta, based in the UK, is currently touring India to conduct intricate procedures for atrial fibrillation (AF) while simultaneously training local cardiologists through live demonstrations.

After launching this initiative at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, Prof Gupta successfully completed a specialized AF ablation workshop in Ahmedabad on March 31 and April 1. He has now relocated to Mumbai, where he is performing complex electrophysiology procedures at Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, offering his services at no cost to both patients and the hospital.

This initiative represents a significant departure from traditional practices, enabling procedures that are typically unavailable or prohibitively expensive in many parts of India to be conducted affordably. In addition, local specialists are being trained to carry out these procedures independently.

“Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent heart rhythm disorder impacting millions. It can be effectively treated through a procedure known as catheter ablation. I have developed a cost-effective single catheter ablation technique, which allows this treatment to reach a larger patient population. I am conducting ablation procedures while also training local cardiologists using a hands-on approach,” Prof Gupta stated, highlighting the importance of “structured training alongside live cases.”

Unlike typical visiting-surgeon programs, local cardiologists are deeply involved in the procedures, gaining practical experience in advanced AF ablation and its related interventions. The program will proceed to Pune next, where an advanced electrophysiology workshop is scheduled at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre on April 6 and 7, continuing the model of live procedures paired with intensive training.

As a consultant at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, Prof Gupta is globally recognized for his expertise in complex AF ablation and left atrial appendage occlusion, having led numerous international catheter ablation research trials.

Medical professionals have noted the immediate advantages: patients who may have otherwise been unable to afford such procedures are receiving advanced treatment at little to no cost, while Indian doctors are learning to continue this expertise autonomously.

With atrial fibrillation being a leading cause of stroke and frequently underdiagnosed in India, experts believe that this combination of enhanced access and skill transfer could significantly improve long-term health outcomes.
