Bhopal, April 15 (NationPress) Respected BJP figure and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Uma Bharti, issued a stern warning to the state administration regarding the distribution of liquor outlets amidst ongoing protests from women across various regions in the state, asserting that ‘the watchman is still alive’.
She highlighted that two years prior, a significant initiative was launched in Madhya Pradesh aimed at prohibiting liquor, which culminated in a new liquor policy unveiled in early January 2023.
The former Chief Minister emphasized that this excise policy was developed after comprehensive discussions, steering the state towards complete prohibition within a few years.
“I have been anticipating the effective implementation of this policy for the past two years. Over the last eighteen months, I have engaged in ongoing discussions regarding this matter with the current government. Whether it be our administration or our Chief Minister, there are times when our conversations remain private,” she stated.
Bharti further asserted that many perceive her as indifferent to the liquor shop issue, but she clarified, “My thoughts have been troubled regarding this matter for the last four months.”
She indicated that the urgent concern has led to extensive public protests, particularly from women, against the allocation of liquor outlets.
“Have we become negligent regarding the liquor distribution policy? The watchman is still alive. There is no requirement for stones; the impacts of cow dung will be more substantial,” declared the former Chief Minister.
Since April 1, demonstrations against liquor shops have been observed in numerous areas of the state, including Bhopal, Indore, and Jabalpur.
Most of these protests are spearheaded by women who are advocating for the relocation of liquor stores, arguing that the current establishments have become a significant source of disturbance in their neighborhoods.
In 2022, Bharti initiated a unique protest by tying two cows in front of a liquor shop in Orchha, located in the Niwari district, renowned for its temples and palaces, urging the public to consume milk instead of alcohol.
In 2023, she set up camp at a temple in Bhopal for two days, demanding a stricter excise policy for the state.
Prior to these symbolic protests, she had also thrown stones at a liquor shop situated in the Barkhedi Pathani area. Ironically, that liquor outlet remains in operation.
