The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) on Tuesday, 25 August announced a state-wide tricolour motorcycle rally titled 'Berozgar Hakk Elgar' (Unemployed Rights Elgar), scheduled for 27 August across all districts and administrative divisions of Maharashtra. The mobilisation marks the party's sharpest public push yet on the issue of rising unemployment in the state.

What the Rally Demands

The NCP (SP) has outlined a multi-point charter centred on employment rights. Key demands include ensuring jobs for local residents in Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) zones, the immediate filling of vacant government posts, stringent action against those involved in exam paper leaks and recruitment malpractices, and completing pending police recruitment drives within stipulated timelines.

The party has also called for the re-establishment of employment exchange centres in every MIDC zone, an immediate clearance of the recruitment backlog in reserved categories, and a shift away from contractual hiring in favour of regular government employment for qualified youth. District-wise job-creation programmes have been demanded as a concrete policy response.

Leadership and Route

Regional leadership for the rallies has been assigned across Maharashtra's divisions. In Mumbai, National Working President and Member of Parliament Supriya Sule, alongside State President Shashikant Shinde, will lead the protest. Former minister Anil Deshmukh will head the rally in Vidarbha (Nagpur), while former minister Rajesh Tope will lead in Marathwada (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar).

In North Maharashtra (Nashik), MLAs Rohit Pawar and Sunil Bhusara will take charge. Jayant Patil and Harshvardhan Patil will lead in Western Maharashtra, and MLA Jitendra Awhad will head the Konkan Division (Thane) contingent. The rallies will originate from key locations in each district and conclude at the respective District Collectorates.

Tribal Students Agitation in Pune

Separately, NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar visited the ongoing agitation of tribal students in Manjari, Pune, expressing solidarity with their demands. He said it had come to light, during a meeting of MLAs convened by the concerned minister, that the Tribal Department minister himself was reportedly speaking against the students' demands — a development Pawar described as 'extremely unfortunate.'

'Concrete decisions must be made on the students' demands; otherwise, this agitation will intensify further,' Pawar said. He added that all MLAs from the tribal community were expected to meet the Chief Minister that evening, following pressure from the students. He warned that if justice is not served, students would demand the resignation of ministers from the department.

'Under no circumstances should there be a withdrawal from the agitation until the demands are accepted; we are all together with them,' Pawar said, assuring the students of the party's continued support.

Political Context

The 'Berozgar Hakk Elgar' rally comes at a time when unemployment, exam paper leaks, and delayed government recruitments have emerged as politically charged issues in Maharashtra. The NCP (SP), as part of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, has increasingly sought to consolidate youth and job-seeker sentiment ahead of future electoral contests. This is the party's most coordinated state-wide mobilisation on the unemployment issue to date.

With the rally spanning all districts and senior leaders deployed across each division, the party appears intent on converting public frustration over joblessness into a sustained political campaign. How the ruling coalition responds to the charter of demands will be closely watched in the days ahead.
