Karur, Sep 28 (NationPress) The Director General of Police (DGP) for Tamil Nadu, G. Venkataraman, characterized the stampede that occurred during actor-turned-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur as "extremely regrettable".

"A distressing event transpired; one that is truly unfortunate," Venkataraman informed journalists during an early morning briefing, noting that the incident was precipitated by an unforeseen influx of attendees and inadequate facilities at the venue.

The DGP mentioned that one of the reasons for the crowd surge was confusion regarding the timing of Vijay's arrival. "While permission for the event was requested between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., the TVK Twitter account indicated he would arrive at noon, prompting attendees to begin gathering from 11 a.m. He ultimately arrived at 7:40 p.m., leaving the crowd waiting in the scorching sun without sufficient food and water," he elaborated.

Organizers had anticipated around 10,000 participants, but close to 27,000 individuals flocked to Velusamypuram to see Vijay. Police had initially prepared for approximately 20,000.

"Our aim is not to assign blame, but these are the circumstances," Venkataraman stated, adding that an enthusiastic reception for Vijay led to a push forward as fans followed him into the venue.

When questioned about possible security shortcomings, the DGP emphasized that the event was conducted on a public thoroughfare, complicating the implementation of additional barricades. "The police are merely an additional support; we had clearly briefed the organizers regarding crowd control and safety protocols," he explained.

The senior officer noted that approximately 500 police personnel were initially deployed, but additional forces were called in as the situation intensified.

Currently, ADGP (Law & Order) Davidson Devasirvatham, along with three Inspectors General, two DIGs, ten Superintendents of Police, and over 2,000 additional personnel have been dispatched to Karur.

The state government has mandated a judicial inquiry, led by retired High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan, to investigate the incident and determine accountability.

This tragedy, one of the most severe in Tamil Nadu's political event history, has sparked widespread demands for enhanced safety regulations and improved crowd management at large events.
