New Delhi, Aug 14 (NationPress) Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal stated on Thursday that India is actively participating in discussions with the US regarding the ongoing negotiations for the bilateral trade agreement (BTA), with details on the next round of talks expected to be clarified by the end of August.
"In spite of a volatile global policy landscape, India's services and merchandise exports in July and during FY26 thus far have seen substantial growth, significantly outpacing the global export growth," Barthwal highlighted during a press briefing.
India's merchandise exports experienced a remarkable 7.29 percent surge, reaching $37.24 billion in July this year, compared to $34.71 billion in the same month last year.
"The primary contributors to goods exports in July included engineering products, electronics, pharmaceuticals, organic and inorganic chemicals, as well as gems and jewellery," he noted.
This increase in goods exports can also be attributed to exporters accelerating shipments in anticipation of heightened US tariffs that took effect in August.
From April to July in the fiscal year 2025-26, exports have seen a 3.07 percent rise to $149.2 billion, while imports increased by 5.36 percent to $244.01 billion during the same period.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that India would not compromise on the welfare of its farmers, fishermen, and the dairy sector, expressing his willingness to incur a significant personal cost if required.
In addition, the government has reiterated that the India-US relationship is multifaceted, with trade being "only one component" of a "very significant relationship" that also includes geopolitical and strategic dimensions.
The government has informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs that there are no changes regarding the sixth round of India-US discussions, which may lead to a trade agreement between the two nations.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reaffirmed the significance of the India-US partnership despite current challenges, and the Commerce Secretary assured that the dialogue is ongoing.
Recently, US President Trump imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on India’s exports related to purchases of Russian oil, raising the total tariff on Indian exports entering the US to 50 percent.
Barthwal further indicated that the government is striving to diversify India’s export markets in light of the steep tariff increases announced by the US. Efforts are underway to expedite free trade agreements and review existing agreements with entities such as the EU, UK, EFTA, Oman, ASEAN, New Zealand, Peru, and Chile.
