Kochi, Feb 23 (NationPress) AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal raised concerns on Monday regarding the State government's approach to the arrest of the Sabarimala tantri. He accused the authorities of an unwarranted rush to label him guilty, despite the court's failure to present any supporting evidence.
Venugopal stated that if legitimate evidence were available, the arrest would not face opposition. He emphasized that the Vigilance Court, during the bail hearing, noted there was not even a hint of evidence against the Tantri.
“What is the motive behind challenging the court’s decision?” he questioned, criticizing remarks made by Law Minister P. Rajeeve in response to the bail ruling.
He asserted that the Congress party has never claimed the tantri should evade arrest if warranted by evidence. “Let justice prevail. However, the eagerness to label him guilty without presenting evidence in court raises profound concerns,” he added, mentioning that suspicions of a conspiracy arose only after the court's comments.
Echoing these sentiments, Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan amplified the Opposition’s critique of the government during his statewide political tour.
Addressing a gathering in Adimali, Satheesan insisted that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) must clarify the rationale and evidence leading to the tantri's arrest. “The Opposition made its position clear in the Assembly on January 11, right after the arrest. The SIT is obliged to inform the public regarding the specific offense and the tantri’s alleged involvement,” he stated.
The Opposition has opted to boycott the Assembly, demanding the resignation of Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan and an end to what they claim is interference by the Chief Minister’s Office in the investigation.
Satheesan also countered accusations from ministers claiming the Opposition was protecting the Tantri and undermining the judiciary. He highlighted that it was, in fact, the Law Minister who criticized the court for granting bail.
Both leaders asserted that while they do not seek special treatment for the Tantri, he is entitled to the same legal protections as any citizen, and that the SIT must reveal the evidentiary basis for the arrest to restore public trust.
Among the 13 individuals detained by the SIT, six have been granted bail thus far, with the bail applications of the remaining individuals set to be considered in the coming days.
