Varkala (Kerala), March 4 (NationPress) V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, has accused the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of intentionally undermining the Sabarimala gold smuggling case. He claims that their failure to file a charge sheet within the mandatory 90 days allowed key accused and senior CPI-M figure A. Padmakumar to obtain statutory bail.

Speaking to reporters after learning about Padmakumar's bail, Satheesan explained that the law entitles an accused to default bail if the investigation agency does not submit its charge sheet within the specified time frame.

"This is exactly how Padmakumar managed to gain his freedom. The SIT, allegedly supported by the Chief Minister’s Office, created the conditions for this outcome," he asserted, adding that the Opposition had forewarned about this possibility weeks prior.

With eight out of the 13 individuals detained in the gold heist case now released on bail, the Congress leader cautioned that those with political influence could potentially tamper with or destroy evidence.

"Even during their time in custody, the investigators failed to gather essential evidence. Now that they are released, any remaining chances of collecting evidence will disappear," he lamented.

According to him, the integrity and significance of the case are at risk of being lost, likely leading to a situation without accountability.

Satheesan further claimed that all those involved in the case had connections to the CPI-M and that the investigation did not include individuals who should have been arrested.

"There seems to be a clear effort to protect the actual perpetrators. If those in custody come forward, more names would be revealed. What we are witnessing is the result of a conspiracy to shield those involved," he charged.

Criticizing the investigation's execution, Satheesan stated that it is widely thought to operate under court supervision, yet a preliminary charge sheet has not been filed within the legal deadline.

He also expressed concerns regarding the arrest of the temple thantri, noting that the charges against him were not publicly specified.

"The court itself remarked that there was not even a shred of evidence against him. If this trend continues, the credibility of the SIT will be severely compromised," he warned.

In a related development, Kantarar Rajeevar, the temple thantri who secured bail last month, appeared before Enforcement Directorate officials in Kochi regarding a case they had initiated.

Point of View

The allegations made by V.D. Satheesan regarding the SIT's handling of the Sabarimala case emphasize the importance of accountability in high-profile investigations. The political ramifications of the case, especially with influential figures involved, warrant close scrutiny to ensure justice is served.
