Is the Sabarimala Gold Theft Case Facing Sabotage?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 31 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V.D. Satheesan, fiercely criticized the Pinarayi Vijayan government on Wednesday, claiming there is a concerted effort to undermine the high court-supervised Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the Sabarimala gold smuggling scandal.
He asserted that the inclusion of two Circle Inspectors allegedly linked to CPI(M) leadership has critically undermined the investigation's integrity and autonomy.
Satheesan raised concerns regarding the selection process that permitted officers with purported ties to a ruling party faction to join a sensitive investigation sanctioned by the high court.
It has come to light that two names were approved by the court; however, Satheesan alleged that the process was manipulated by two senior IPS officers in the state and a high-ranking official at the Crime Branch headquarters.
The opposition leader noted that the Crime Branch official in question has a controversial past, previously accused of fabricating charges against Congress leaders.
According to Satheesan, this same officer is now attempting to weaken the SIT from within and steer the investigation in favor of the CPI(M).
Reiterating previous allegations, he claimed there is increasing evidence that senior IPS officers are trying to influence the SIT’s operations.
He argued that such interference is part of a broader strategy to render the investigation ineffective and prevent it from uncovering the true beneficiaries and masterminds linked to the alleged gold smuggling operation associated with Sabarimala.
Furthermore, he accused this group of trying to infiltrate the SIT, leak critical information to the government, divert the investigation's trajectory, and shield the actual offenders.
Satheesan charged the government and the CPI(M) with orchestrating a systematic effort to obstruct the case, with certain police officers actively participating in this endeavor.
He warned that even the supervisory role of the high court is under threat, urging the judiciary to intervene decisively. He called for an immediate examination of the situation to protect the integrity of the SIT and ensure a fair and credible investigation into the Sabarimala gold smuggling case.
