The two-day trip included high-profile meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, but planned interactions with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi did not materialise, sparking political speculation.

Gandhi Meetings Deferred, Not Cancelled

Congress sources were quick to clarify that the proposed meeting with Rahul Gandhi had been deferred, not called off. According to reports, Vijay had expressed willingness to meet Gandhi on Wednesday night, and efforts were renewed on Thursday morning to arrange the interaction. However, a tightly packed schedule and the Chief Minister's planned return flight to Chennai reportedly prevented the meeting from taking place.

A senior Congress leader indicated that Vijay is expected back in New Delhi around 11 June for the NITI Aayog meeting, at which point he may meet both Rahul Gandhi and Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Vijay returned to Chennai on a special flight after wrapping up his engagements in the national capital.

According to a government release, Vijay conveyed serious concern over Karnataka's decision to proceed with a ground-breaking ceremony for the Mekedatu balancing reservoir, arguing that the project violated the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and ran contrary to the Supreme Court's directions on water sharing.

Vijay also raised the recurring issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen being arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, seeking central intervention. Additionally, he flagged the controversy surrounding the sequence in which the 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu' was played during the swearing-in ceremony of the new government.

Infrastructure Funding Sought from Finance Minister

In a separate meeting, Vijay submitted a detailed memorandum to Finance Minister Sitharaman, seeking priority funding for a range of infrastructure projects in Tamil Nadu. The memorandum covered ports, national highways, railway expansions, and industrial corridors — all considered critical to the state's economic growth trajectory.
