Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister-designate C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday, 7 May was formally invited to form the government in Tamil Nadu after meeting Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai and presenting details of the political support backing his claim. The invitation ends days of speculation over whether the Governor would delay the process pending additional letters of support.

What Happened at Lok Bhavan

TVK, which emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu's 234-member Assembly by winning 108 seats in its electoral debut, fell short of the simple majority mark of 118. Sources familiar with the discussions said Vijay conveyed to the Governor that he was confident of proving his majority on the floor of the House after the swearing-in ceremony. He reportedly presented a detailed account of the support currently available to him and assured Governor Arlekar that the numbers required to sustain the government would be secured during the trust vote.

Following the discussions, Governor Arlekar is learnt to have expressed satisfaction over the presentation and assurances offered by the TVK leadership, after which the formal invitation to form the government was extended.

Swearing-In Ceremony Expected This Week

Sources indicated that preparations for the swearing-in ceremony have already commenced, with the event likely to be held either on Friday or Saturday in Chennai. Senior TVK leaders are expected to participate alongside alliance partners and invited political leaders from across the country. Back-channel negotiations over outside support are, however, expected to continue until the trust vote is completed in the Assembly.

Vijay becomes the first actor in recent decades to convert cinematic popularity into a major electoral mandate on a debut outing.
