Chennai, May 13 (NationPress) The President of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and actor-turned-politician Vijay expressed his approval of the Coimbatore Mahila Court's decision to hand down life sentences to all nine defendants in the Pollachi sexual assault case, deeming it a crucial yet overdue advancement in the pursuit of justice.
Following the court's verdict, Vijay remarked, "The life sentences imposed on those found guilty in the Pollachi case are a commendable action. The survivors, who have displayed remarkable bravery over the last six years, warrant our utmost respect for their tenacity and relentless quest for justice. I offer my sincere admiration to them."
The Special women's court in Coimbatore sentenced the offenders to life imprisonment for the entirety of their natural lives under Section 376D of the Indian Penal Code.
This ruling arrives six years after the case—entailing the sexual assault and extortion of multiple women—elicited widespread public outrage throughout Tamil Nadu.
Vijay took this opportunity to reaffirm his party's demand for comprehensive judicial reforms to eliminate delays in justice delivery.
"Justice delayed is justice denied. We call upon the state government to accelerate the formation of fast-track special courts for addressing cases of sexual harassment and violence against women and children," he stated.
"Such cases should be resolved within 90 days to alleviate the prolonged trauma endured by survivors."
He also underlined the significance of societal accountability in safeguarding women's welfare.
"As Indian women continue to achieve extraordinary milestones in the armed forces and other sectors, it becomes critical for society to prioritize their safety and dignity. Let's unite to establish a secure and respectful environment for women," the TVK Chief emphasized.
The Pollachi case, which emerged in 2019, involved a criminal syndicate engaged in sexual assault and blackmail, where perpetrators lured women under false pretenses and recorded the acts to intimidate the victims.
The determination of the surviving victims and the eventual legal resolution represent a pivotal moment in the struggle for justice against gender-based violence.
