Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, April 14 (NationPress) In celebration of B.R. Ambedkar's birth anniversary, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan delivered a powerful message emphasizing the importance of equality and social justice as Kerala confronts serious allegations of caste discrimination within its higher education system.
In his Ambedkar Jayanti message, the Chief Minister took to social media to honor Ambedkar.
He characterized Ambedkar as a monumental figure committed to creating a society devoid of caste barriers.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that Ambedkar’s unwavering commitment to tackling social inequalities and his lasting impact continue to inspire the nation.
Nonetheless, Vijayan expressed profound concern regarding recent incidents, notably the heartbreaking death of a first-year BDS student at a private medical college in Ancharakandi, Kannur.
The student, Nithin Raj from Thiruvananthapuram, reportedly encountered caste-related harassment, igniting widespread indignation.
Describing the event as deeply distressing, the Chief Minister stated that any act leading to the demise of a promising student is unacceptable.
Vijayan warned that the rise of caste discrimination, even on educational campuses, poses serious challenges to Kerala’s hard-won progressive ethos.
“Now is the time for society to reflect,” he urged, calling for a collective effort to confront these issues.
He also highlighted the federal government's negligence regarding the long-standing demand for a specific law aimed at combating caste discrimination in educational institutions, commonly referred to as the Rohith Vemula Act.
He pointed out that existing guidelines from the University Grants Commission have been suspended by the Supreme Court, creating a regulatory void.
Championing unity against all forms of division and animosity, the Chief Minister encouraged society to draw inspiration from Ambedkar’s principles.
He stressed the importance of achieving a just and equitable social order, which remains an unfinished endeavor that requires renewed dedication.
In extending his greetings for Ambedkar Jayanti, Vijayan reaffirmed that preserving dignity and equality should remain at the heart of Kerala’s societal framework.
