Kolkata, June 12 (NationPress) The number of individuals apprehended in relation to the violent altercations between two factions in the Maheshtala region of South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, has now risen to 40, according to a statement from the state police released on Thursday.
"Currently, 40 individuals have been detained across seven cases linked to the incident. We will ensure that none involved in the violence escapes justice," the police statement asserted.
Nonetheless, the assertions made by the state police regarding the origins of the unrest have been vehemently challenged by the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, who is also a BJP leader.
The police's account suggested that the clashes stemmed from "unauthorized construction and plantation on government property, which led to brick-batting at police and incidents of vandalism in the area."
In contrast, LoP Adhikari accused the police of minimizing what he described as a "blatant communal attack on Hindus," framing it merely as a "clash between two groups."
He further criticized the police for their silence regarding the devastation of the Tulsi Manch, the destruction of homes and shops belonging to Hindus, and the vandalism that occurred at a local Hindu religious site in Maheshtala.
Adhikari also pointed fingers at Mukul Mia, the Inspector-in-charge of Rabindra Nagar police station, and Kamrujjaman Molla, the local Sub-Divisional Police Officer, for their inaction during the clashes.
"This police inaction is reminiscent of the violence in Murshidabad just months ago, which similarly devastated lives. The assaults on Hindus have now reached the heart of Kolkata," remarked LoP Adhikari.
He emphasized that the arrest of only 40 individuals is insufficient, given that hundreds took part in the disturbances in Maheshtala on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, state police have issued a warning against spreading rumors and stated that those attempting to incite unrest will face stringent legal repercussions.
