Bhopal, Feb 17 (NationPress) The 24th edition of the water sports championship for police and other security forces was officially launched by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav at Upper Lake on Monday.
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Yadav, alongside the Director General of Police (DGP), performed the ceremonial lamp lighting, took the guard of honour, and engaged with athletes at the boat club.
In his speech, Chief Minister Yadav commended the police and security personnel for their remarkable achievements, winning medals at both national and international levels.
"Your commitment to sports, paired with your national duties, serves as a beacon of inspiration for the nation’s youth. I wish the best for every participant and team in this championship," he stated.
This four-day event, orchestrated by the All India Sports Control Board (AISC) in the city renowned for its lakes, will showcase competitions for over 360 medals. A total of 557 participants from 22 states, union territories, and Central Armed Police Forces are competing, including 123 female athletes.
Chief Minister Yadav also warmly welcomed all teams nationwide participating in the water sports championship in Bhopal.
"Madhya Pradesh has successfully hosted this event five times before, and I am optimistic that the 6th edition will be a resounding success," he added.
Throughout the five-day competition, 27 events in canoeing, kayaking, and rowing will take place. A total of 360 medals will be distributed -- 60 gold, 60 silver, and 60 bronze in both men's and women's divisions.
Notably, this marks the 6th occasion Bhopal has hosted the water sports championship, having previously done so in 2005, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2019.
Water sports were introduced to the police games by the All India Police Sports Control Board in 2002, where the Madhya Pradesh Police excelled, winning 12 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
