Kolkata, Nov 1 (NationPress) The West Bengal Police are set to collaborate with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance crime prevention efforts, according to a police source on Saturday. An AI cell will be established within the police department.
As per the police source, the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar provided directives regarding this initiative from Bhabani Bhawan (state police headquarters) on Friday. This step is aimed at making the police more technology-dependent and efficient across various domains, including investigation, administrative tasks, planning, and training.
Sources from Bhabani Bhawan indicate that the new AI cell will be headed by a police officer of the rank of Additional DG (ADG), who will serve as the chairperson of this cell. All operational and policy-related actions of the AI cell will be executed under his oversight. An officer with the rank of IGP/DIG/SP will assist him, focusing on coordination, documentation, and the cell's progress.
"Two expert technologists will support the on-duty police officers in technical matters. Their role includes evaluating and advising on management strategies. Members of the new cell will convene bi-weekly or as necessary to track its progress," stated a police source.
This cutting-edge AI cell will be based at Bhabani Bhawan of the West Bengal Police Department. The state government will provide the essential financial, administrative, and technical backing for this initiative, as per the source. Furthermore, the cell will be tasked with creating policies to ensure transparency in AI usage, along with organizing all AI-related training camps.
It has been reported that the administrative control of this cell will remain with DGP Rajeev Kumar.
The primary goal of this cell is to stay aligned with modern advancements and to position itself as a leader in crime prevention. Regular training sessions will be conducted in various districts to cultivate practical AI experience. This artificial intelligence will become a key ally for the state police in investigations, crime management, and data analysis.
