New Delhi/Jaipur, March 25 (NationPress) In a significant meeting held on Wednesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla convened with Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi at the Parliament House to discuss strategies for maximizing wheat procurement in Rajasthan while protecting the interests of farmers. Present at the meeting were Rajasthan’s Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Sumit Godara and Minister for Cooperatives Gautam Dak.

The primary focus of the discussions was to ensure that farmers obtain the best returns for their wheat production and experience a hassle-free procurement process. Om Birla pointed out that irregular weather patterns could lead to unseasonal rainfall, posing a risk to the wheat crop.

To address this, he stressed the need for a more efficient, fast, and streamlined procurement process to minimize potential losses for farmers.

He instructed agencies like the Food Corporation of India (FCI), RAJFED, and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) to set up the highest possible number of procurement centers throughout the state.

Additionally, he called for an increase in the number of weighing scales at procurement locations and for the procurement to be expedited so that farmers can sell their produce without facing challenges. Birla noted that positioning procurement centers closer to farmers would help cut down transportation costs and save valuable time.

Moreover, he highlighted the importance of enhancing procurement infrastructure this year, especially considering the anticipated bumper wheat harvest in Rajasthan.

During the meeting, it was reported that the Rajasthan government is offering a bonus of Rs 150 per quintal on wheat this year. When combined with the Minimum Support Price (MSP), farmers will earn a total of Rs 2,735 per quintal.

Last year, approximately 21.62 lakh metric tonnes of wheat were procured in the state, and this year’s figures are expected to exceed that due to increased production.

It was also shared that while around 1.72 lakh farmers registered for procurement last year, over 2 lakh farmers have already registered this year, indicating a rise in participation and improved output.

Speaker Birla directed relevant officials to ensure that all arrangements are implemented in a timely and transparent manner, ensuring farmers receive fair prices without any difficulties.

Also in attendance were OSD to the Lok Sabha Speaker Rajiv Datta, Joint Secretary Gaurav Goyal, and OSD Rajesh Goyal. Senior officials from the Rajasthan government, Manju Rajpal and Ambrish Kumar, attended the meeting via video conferencing.
