With the Launch of International Flights at Veer Savarkar Airport, PM Modi Encourages Visits to Cellular Jail

New Delhi, Dec 18 (NationPress) Veer Savarkar Airport, formerly referred to as Port Blair Airport, located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has inaugurated its runway for international flights, thus allowing the region to attract tourists and visitors globally.
The archipelago, which has seen its tourism potential largely untapped due to limited air access, experienced a significant enhancement when the Veer Savarkar Airport welcomed its inaugural international flight last month. Experts predict that the islands are poised to become a prominent tourist destination soon, with travelers arriving from various continents.
In the meantime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged visitors to explore the Cellular Jail, in addition to enjoying the calm and peaceful islands.
“Make sure to visit the Cellular Jail and draw inspiration from the bravery of the great Veer Savarkar,” PM Modi stated in a message on X.
It is worth noting that this notorious Cellular Jail was where Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was imprisoned for 11 years during India’s struggle for independence. Known as ‘Kala Paani’, this was one of the most severe prison sentences imposed by the British.
PM Modi also emphasized the importance of honoring and preserving the legacy of the courageous individuals who laid down their lives for the nation.
This tribute to the heroes was in response to a post on X by a prominent journalist, who highlighted the naming of 21 Andaman islands after Param Vir Chakras as his favorite aspect of Andaman tourism.
Last year, PM Modi named the 21 largest unnamed islands of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands after recipients of the Param Vir Chakra on the occasion of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's 126th birth anniversary, celebrated as Parakram Diwas.
In his post on X, PM Modi stressed the necessity of remembering the nation’s brave heroes, who made the ultimate sacrifices for the country.
“Naming the islands in the Andaman and Nicobar after our heroes ensures that their contributions to the nation are remembered for future generations. This initiative is part of our broader goal to honor and celebrate the memory of our freedom fighters and distinguished individuals who have significantly impacted our nation,” he remarked.
The Prime Minister further noted, “Nations that maintain a connection with their roots are the ones that advance in development and nation-building.”
