Kochi, Jan 19 (NationPress) The Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi presented the Priyadarshini Literary Award, established by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), to the esteemed Malayalam writer and critic Dr. M. Leelavathy on Monday. This event transformed a brief visit to Kochi into a significant moment filled with political meaning and literary depth.

Describing it as a “tremendous honor” to be part of the ceremony, LoP Rahul Gandhi referred to the 98-year-old intellectual as “an icon not just for Kerala, but for the entire nation.”

He expressed admiration for Leelavathy’s discipline and intellectual vigor, highlighting her routine of starting her day at 3 a.m., her extensive reading, and her ongoing writing.

“She is currently exploring themes of caste globally. Many resonate with these ideas but lack the courage to voice them,” he remarked.

LoP Gandhi emphasized that remarkable nations emerge from open dialogue. “Great nations and great individuals are forged when they articulate their thoughts. Leelavathy embodies this spirit,” he stated, contrasting those who remain apathetic while comfortable with thinkers who hold strong, socially responsible views.

Characterizing her as simple, humble, and deeply connected, LoP Gandhi noted that he saw in her “the authentic essence of Kerala.”

He congratulated her for the wisdom she has imparted over the years, expressing warmth with, “We eagerly await your centenary.”

Upon receiving the award, Dr. Leelavathy expressed her profound gratitude to the Indian National Congress for honoring her with an award named after the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

She reminisced about receiving the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award from Indira Gandhi in 1981.

“I am now receiving an award from her grandson, nearly half a century later. It is a remarkable and poignant coincidence,” she stated.

Reflecting on the Gandhi legacy, Dr. Leelavathy mentioned that two family members had sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.

She acknowledged Indira Gandhi’s lifelong dedication to secularism, recalling how, as a child, Indira discarded a valuable foreign doll as part of the freedom movement, later committing herself fully to the cause of secularism, valuing it above her own life.

Her admiration for Indira Gandhi extended to Rajiv Gandhi as well, particularly recognizing his efforts in promoting women to leadership roles.

Dr. Leelavathy expressed that she sees the same values reflected in Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. “I wish for both to ascend to positions of power. I may not live to witness it, but I can envision it,” she commented.

A distinguished author, literary critic, and educator, Dr. M. Leelavathy has taught at multiple colleges in Kerala and retired as Principal of Government Brennen College, Thalassery.

Her extensive and impactful career has garnered numerous accolades, including the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award.
