Chennai, Jan 11 (NationPress) A yellow alert has been declared for Chennai and its adjacent districts on Sunday due to ongoing weather conditions influenced by a system over the Bay of Bengal, according to the Meteorological Department.
A deep depression that formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal diminished into a depression on Saturday morning and made landfall near Mullaittivu, northeastern Sri Lanka, by evening. As a result, Chennai experienced predominantly cloudy weather throughout Saturday, with various areas reporting intermittent drizzle.
The Regional Meteorological Centre indicated that the system was tracking at a speed of approximately 8 kmph in the six hours leading up to its landfall. By 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, it had crossed the Sri Lankan coastline and was located about 400 km southeast of Chennai.
The system is expected to shift nearly westward and further weaken into a well-defined low-pressure area within the next 12 hours.
Due to its effects, heavy rainfall is anticipated in isolated locations across Chennai and parts of Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram districts, and Puducherry on Sunday.
Weather officials warned that brief intense rainfall may lead to temporary waterlogging in lower-lying areas.
For Monday, the Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted light to moderate rain in several areas throughout Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Thunderstorms with lightning are also likely to occur at a couple of spots, even as the system gradually weakens.
Surface wind speeds of 35 to 45 kmph are expected to be prevalent over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Considering the rough sea conditions, fishermen are advised against venturing into the sea along these shores. Those already out at sea are urged to steer clear of the southeast and southwest Bay of Bengal, as well as the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean, including areas along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin region.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents to stay informed with official weather updates and adhere to safety advisories in the coming days.
