Chennai, Oct 22 (NationPress) A deep depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal is predicted to escalate into a well-defined low-pressure area today, resulting in heavy rainfall across various regions of Tamil Nadu since the early hours.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has released several weather alerts for the state, indicating the potential for very heavy to extremely heavy rain in multiple districts.

The RMC reports that this weather system, currently situated over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is expected to shift west-northwest towards the northern coast of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh within the next 24 hours.

Authorities have indicated that the system could further strengthen, with clarity expected by tonight regarding its potential development into a cyclonic storm.

Amudha, head of the southern region at the Meteorological Department, stated that the core of the depression is anticipated to transform into a low-pressure area over the adjacent west-central Bay of Bengal by this afternoon.

“The movement and intensity of the system are under close observation. The next 12 hours will be pivotal in determining whether it escalates into a cyclone,” she noted.

In response to the department’s predictions, red alerts have been issued for Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai districts, which are expected to face extremely heavy rainfall.

An orange alert has been declared for 11 districts, including Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal, which are likely to endure very heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, the RMC has warned of strong showers anticipated in Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Vellore, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri, and Pudukottai districts.

For Wednesday, heavy rainfall is forecasted in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, and Ranipet, while nearby districts such as Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, and Puducherry may also be impacted.
