Chennai, Nov 16 (NationPress) A new low-pressure system has emerged over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lankan coast, developed on November 14, leading to heightened rain predictions for Tamil Nadu. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall across numerous districts in the upcoming days.
In the last 24 hours, Thiruchendur in the Thoothukudi district recorded the highest rainfall at 8 cm. Other areas also reported significant precipitation, including Uthu and Radhapuram in the Tirunelveli district and Kayalpattinam in Thoothukudi, each receiving 7 cm. Nalumukku in Tirunelveli, along with Kakachi and Kulasekaranpattinam in Thoothukudi, noted 6 cm.
The weather office predicts that the low-pressure system will shift towards the Tamil Nadu coast in a west-northwest trajectory within the next 24 hours. Consequently, moderate rain coupled with thunderstorms is anticipated on Sunday and Monday in various coastal and interior districts.
The RMC has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for exceptionally heavy rainfall on Sunday in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts, including Karaikal. Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected in Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, and Villupuram districts, along with Puducherry.
On Monday, very heavy rainfall is forecast for Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi districts, as well as Puducherry. Areas such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, and Pudukottai, which have already suffered from cyclone impacts, are also likely to experience heavy showers in isolated locations.
In Chennai and its suburbs, a partly cloudy sky is expected on Sunday, with possibilities of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in certain areas.
The Meteorological Department has cautioned about squally weather conditions prevalent over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal, along with the south Andhra Pradesh coast on Sunday and Monday. Fishermen are strongly advised against venturing into these waters until conditions improve.
Considering the ongoing recovery from cyclone damage in several districts, authorities urge residents to exercise caution, avoid waterlogged areas, and stay updated through local disaster management teams, as rainfall is expected to persist until November 21.
