The Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned funds totalling over ₹69 crore for the modernisation, interior curation, and infrastructure development of museums across the state, releasing the first instalment for key projects in Varanasi, Firozabad, Deoria, Lucknow, Jhansi, and Kushinagar. The initiative, announced on 1 June, is framed as a concerted push to safeguard the state's cultural and historical legacy while driving heritage tourism.

Key Allocations Across the State

The largest single outlay — ₹30 crore — has been directed to the Shaheed Late Ramchandra Vidyarthi Memorial Site at the Government Asthan Old Kachahari Complex in Deoria, intended to deepen public awareness of the region's nationalist heritage. In Kushinagar, ₹15 crore has been released for the beautification and expansion of the Government Buddhist Museum, a move expected to provide a significant boost to Buddhist and heritage tourism circuits in the state.

In Firozabad, ₹4.40 crore has been sanctioned for curation work at the Glass Museum, while ₹2.60 crore has been released for interior decoration and curation at the Munshi Premchand Memorial Museum and Library in Lamhi, Varanasi — preserving the legacy of the celebrated Hindi literary icon. The Government Museum in Jhansi will receive ₹3 crore for structural strengthening.

Lucknow State Museum Gets Multi-Phase Upgrade

The State Museum in Lucknow is the recipient of multiple allocations spanning several functional areas. Nearly ₹1.98 crore has been earmarked for a Children's Gallery, educational workshops, and landscape development. A further ₹4.59 crore has been approved for a new cafeteria and library within the museum campus.

An additional ₹4.60 crore will go towards basement strengthening and the installation of a modern storage system, while ₹1.74 crore covers sewerage, rainwater harvesting, and water supply upgrades. Another ₹1.59 crore has been sanctioned for the relocation and re-display of sculptures — a project that is reportedly nearing completion.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the government's objective goes beyond physical infrastructure. 'The Yogi Government's priority is not only to create development projects but also to preserve Uttar Pradesh's glorious heritage and present it to future generations in a modern form,' Singh said. He added that all executing agencies have been directed to maintain quality standards and adhere to project timelines.

Singh warned that strict action would be taken against any agency found using substandard materials or demonstrating negligence in execution — a signal that the government intends to hold contractors to account on a programme of this scale.

Broader Context and What's Next

The fund releases come under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, whose administration has increasingly tied cultural preservation to the state's tourism economy. Kushinagar, in particular, has been a focal point for Buddhist pilgrimage infrastructure since the inauguration of its international airport in 2021. The museum upgrade there aligns with ongoing efforts to position eastern Uttar Pradesh as a major destination on the Buddhist circuit.

Executing agencies are now expected to begin work in earnest following the first-instalment releases. The government has indicated that subsequent tranches will be contingent on verified progress and quality compliance at each site.
