Lucknow, March 5 (NationPress) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday launched a sharp critique against the Samajwadi Party (SP) for defending its Maharashtra MLA Abu Azmi regarding his admiration for Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
While addressing the UP Assembly, CM Yogi Adityanath condemned the SP for backing its Maharashtra legislator Abu Azmi over the latter's praise for the Mughal conqueror.
He stated that those who view Aurangzeb as a hero do not deserve to reside in the country and urged the SP to expel him due to his contentious comments on the Mughal ruler.
In a lighter vein, he remarked, "Send Abu Azmi to Uttar Pradesh, we will provide him with proper treatment".
CM Yogi also referenced socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia and criticized the SP for straying from its ideological foundations.
"I would like to inform the members of the Samajwadi Party that even if you do not take pride in India's rich heritage, at least consider the principles of the individuals whose name you use for political gain," he stated.
He deemed it unfortunate that SP leaders now idolize Aurangzeb instead of adhering to Lohia's vision.
Demanding Azmi's removal from the party, CM Yogi declared, "The Samajwadi Party should announce his expulsion and send him to UP once. We will handle the rest. A person who, instead of taking pride in the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, feels embarrassed and glorifies Aurangzeb -- should they have the right to exist in India? SP must respond to this inquiry."
He further accused the SP of hypocrisy, stating, "On one hand, you criticize the Maha Kumbh, and on the other, you glorify a ruler who destroyed temples and trampled on India's faith. How can you not manage such an MLA?" He insisted that the SP must hold him accountable and show him the exit.
Azmi's comments describing Aurangzeb as 'not a cruel leader' sparked intense backlash, leading to an FIR against him and his suspension from the Maharashtra Assembly. However, Azmi defended his statements, asserting that he was merely quoting historians and did not intend to offend anyone.
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also supported Azmi and opposed his suspension.
Taking to X, Yadav wrote, "If suspensions begin to be swayed by ideology, then what difference will remain between freedom of expression and slavery? Whether it is our MLAs or MPs, their fearless wisdom is unparalleled. If certain individuals believe that they can silence the truth through 'suspension', it reflects their immature negative thinking."
CM Yogi also referred to historical accounts, emphasizing Aurangzeb's brutality -- even toward his own father, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, whom he imprisoned at Agra Fort.
"Shah Jahan longed for every drop of water. If the SP is proud of Aurangzeb, they should at least read Shah Jahan's biography and witness his suffering," Yogi remarked.
He further questioned the SP's position, asking, "Does the party regard a merciless, fanatical, and cruel ruler -- who came to oppress India and assault its faith -- as its ideal?"
Pointing to Aurangzeb's imposition of the Jizya tax and forced conversions, Yogi added, "No civilized Muslim names his son Aurangzeb because they understand that a name reflects one's deeds."
