New Delhi, May 23 (NationPress) In a devastating occurrence, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari from the Indian Army’s Sikkim Scouts regiment tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue a fellow soldier during an operational mission in North Sikkim on Thursday, officials reported on Friday.
The soldier he tried to save is an Agniveer who was part of Lieutenant Tiwari’s unit.
This 23-year-old officer, who was commissioned less than six months ago on December 14, 2024, was leading a Route Opening Patrol towards a Tactical Operating Base (TOB) in Sikkim, a crucial post being set up for future deployment.
At approximately 11 a.m., Agniveer Stephan Subba, a member of the patrol, lost his balance while navigating a log bridge and was swept away by a powerful mountain stream.
Exhibiting exceptional presence of mind, selfless leadership, and unwavering dedication to his team, Lieutenant Tiwari instinctively jumped into the perilous waters to rescue the Agniveer without a moment's hesitation, Army officials noted.
Another soldier, Naik Pukar Katel, immediately joined in the effort. Together, they were able to rescue the drowning Agniveer. However, tragically, Lieutenant Tiwari was swept away by the fierce current. Despite frantic efforts from his patrol, his body was recovered 800 meters downstream by 11:30 a.m.
