A 19-year-old youth was arrested by Pune Police on 6 August after he burst firecrackers outside Yerwada Central Jail to mark the birthday of an incarcerated accused and uploaded a video of the act on Instagram. The arrest is the latest in a series of police actions against a growing trend of publicly glorifying jailed criminals on social media in Maharashtra.

How the Arrest Unfolded

A patrol team from Yerwada Police Station, deployed under directions from senior officers, received a tip-off that a wanted suspect was expected to appear near Post Office Chowk in the vicinity of the jail. Acting on the intelligence, officers apprehended Shankar Balasaheb Bhalke, a resident of Dhankawadi, at the location.

During interrogation, Bhalke reportedly disclosed that he and associates had burst firecrackers on a road adjacent to the jail's security wall to celebrate the birthday of Sultan Sayyad, an accused currently lodged inside Yerwada Central Jail. According to police, the activity disrupted traffic and posed a risk to the safety of passers-by.

The Social Media Angle

A video of the firecracker celebration was recorded and subsequently uploaded on Instagram, allegedly with the intent of glorifying the jailed accused. The clip gained traction on social media before police took cognisance of it. Officials stated that strict legal action would continue against anyone who uses social media platforms to promote or glorify criminal activity, adding that such conduct would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Officers Behind the Operation

The operation was executed by the investigation team of Yerwada Police Station under the overall guidance of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. Police Sub-Inspector Kishore Berad, along with other officers and personnel from the investigation unit, played a central role in the arrest.

A Recurring Pattern

This is not an isolated incident. On 18 March, a similar birthday celebration outside the high-security Adharwadi Jail in Khadakpada led to the arrest of three youths. That episode involved bursting firecrackers at the prison's main gate, allegedly manhandling police personnel, and the subsequent public parading of the accused — drawing widespread attention across the city. The repeat pattern suggests a coordinated culture of criminal glorification that Maharashtra Police are now actively targeting.

With the 6 August arrest, authorities have signalled that online amplification of such acts will be treated as a criminal offence in its own right, not merely a public nuisance.
