His remains were discovered in the Milanpara region near Mohanbati market in Raiganj. Authorities are probing whether the murder was politically driven or motivated by another factor.
Nabyendu Ghosh had recently been appointed as the district youth vice-president of the Trinamool Congress in north Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur.
He was a divorced father of one and had just launched a sweet shop in the vicinity of the Mohanbati market.
On the night of Wednesday, during the New Year celebrations, a gathering was taking place directly across from his establishment. The 37-year-old Trinamool leader was part of this celebration when multiple assailants arrived on motorcycles. In a sudden attack, he was viciously beaten with wooden sticks and reportedly stabbed multiple times with a knife.
Witnesses reported that the Trinamool leader collapsed on the street, bleeding heavily, while the attackers fled the scene. He was transported to Raiganj Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Hospital staff notified his family, but it remains unclear who transported him, as no associates were found.
Raiganj Superintendent of Police, Sonawane Kuldip Suresh, informed reporters, 'We have sealed off the picnic area behind the shop opposite. An investigation is underway, and we are questioning local residents.'
It has been revealed that the late Nabyendu previously served as the general secretary of the student council at Raiganj College. The Trinamool Congress district president, Kanaia Lal Agarwal, stated, 'I have urged the Superintendent of Police to apprehend the murderers within twenty-four hours and ensure they face justice.'
Nonetheless, the identity of the perpetrators remains unknown, and it's still uncertain whether the crime was rooted in political rivalry or a business conflict. Investigators are also looking into potential personal relationship issues connected to the incident.
