YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Wednesday, 23 September accused the TDP-led coalition government in Andhra Pradesh of unleashing a 'reign of terror' to suppress dissent, alleging that false cases are being filed against opposition leaders and cadre to undermine democratic norms in the state.

What YSRCP Alleged

Manohar Reddy, President of the YSRCP Legal Cell, speaking at the party's Central office in Tadepalli, claimed there is a 'jungle raj' prevailing in the state. He alleged that TDP supporters attacked unemployed youth and YSRCP leaders at the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) office, while the task force conducted raids and allegedly terrorised family members of opposition cadre.

Reddy further alleged that old cases have been reopened against MLC Thalasila Raghuram and Devineni Avinash, characterising this as 'vindictive intent' on the part of the ruling dispensation.

Allegations of Electoral Conspiracy

The YSRCP Legal Cell President alleged that the actions are part of a broader conspiracy to prevent YSRCP leaders from contesting the forthcoming local body elections, with rowdy sheets reportedly being opened against opposition figures at will. He pointedly noted that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Education Minister Lokesh themselves face numerous pending cases, arguing this renders the government's moral authority questionable.

Reddy also drew attention to remarks reportedly made by Chandrababu Naidu at a Kuppam meeting prior to the friction at the SAAP office, alleging these indicate a premeditated conspiracy behind the attack on YSRCP activists and unemployed youth, including differently-abled individuals.

DSC Irregularities at the Centre of the Row

The YSRCP has been pressing for a CBI inquiry into alleged irregularities in the District Selection Committee (DSC) teacher appointments and the manipulation of the sports quota in recruitment. Reddy argued the state government should investigate these irregularities instead of targeting the opposition, contending that the coalition is resorting to police action because it has no credible answers to the questions raised.

The party has also demanded the resignation of Education Minister Lokesh over the alleged recruitment irregularities.

Background: The SAAP Office Protest

The current escalation follows a YSRCP protest held on 21 September at the SAAP office in Vijayawada, where the party demonstrated to press its demands over the DSC issue. The incident at the SAAP office is at the heart of the current dispute, with both sides offering conflicting accounts of who initiated the confrontation. The TDP-led government has not publicly responded to Wednesday's specific allegations at the time of reporting.

With local body elections on the horizon, the political temperature in Andhra Pradesh is expected to remain elevated as both sides sharpen their positions.
