Guwahati, Oct 1 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has taken into custody Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organiser of the North East India Festival (NEIF), along with the singer's manager Siddhartha Sharma, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Mahanta was apprehended at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport upon his return from Singapore, where the festival was taking place.
Meanwhile, Sharma was arrested late Tuesday night from a residential apartment in Gurugram.
Both individuals were transported to Guwahati early Wednesday morning and are currently being interrogated by the SIT, according to police sources.
These arrests signify a significant development in the high-profile case concerning the sudden death of Garg, who passed away in Singapore on September 19.
The singer reportedly encountered breathing difficulties while swimming during a yacht outing, leading to his urgent hospitalization, where he could not be revived.
Authorities in Singapore have provisionally cited “drowning” as the cause of death in the initial death certificate. To facilitate a comprehensive inquiry, the Assam government has formed a 10-member SIT led by Special DGP M.P. Gupta.
The team has already interviewed various individuals connected to the festival, including members of the Singapore Assam Association and others who had travelled from India for the event.
Previously, notices were issued to Mahanta and Sharma, directing them to appear before the SIT, but both reportedly failed to comply, leading to the issuance of a ‘lookout notice’.
Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Interpol was contacted to assist in tracking Mahanta and Sharma after they did not respond to repeated summons. He assured that all legal measures would be pursued to uncover the truth behind Garg's untimely death, especially given the public outcry and the allegations of a potential conspiracy.
With these two pivotal figures now in custody, the SIT is likely to enhance its investigation to unravel the circumstances leading to the singer's tragic death abroad.
Further arrests cannot be discounted.
