New Delhi, Sep 29 (NationPress) Embracing healthy lifestyles can significantly lower the risk of heart disease, as stated by Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday, in recognition of World Heart Day.

This annual observance on September 29 aims to increase awareness regarding various heart diseases and the significance of early detection.

According to Nadda, “World Heart Day underscores the crucial role of cardiovascular health and promotes proactive steps to prevent heart-related ailments. It serves as an essential platform to disseminate knowledge about sustaining a robust and healthy heart through balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and effective stress management.”

“By adopting healthy lifestyles, individuals can markedly diminish their risk of heart disease and enhance their overall well-being. This day encourages communities to focus on early detection, prompt treatment, and heart-friendly practices for a longer, healthier existence,” he added.

The theme for World Heart Day 2025—‘Don’t Miss a Beat’—highlights the importance of understanding one’s heart health before symptoms manifest.

The Ministry of Health has recommended several strategies to combat heart disease, including minimizing salt intake, consuming nutritious foods, limiting alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, exercising consistently, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Senior cardiac surgeon Dr. Ramakant Panda informed IANS that instances of heart diseases have surged over the past decade, particularly among the youth, attributing this trend to lifestyle changes.

“Heart disease was not prevalent in the past; however, it has escalated significantly over the last 30–40 years, especially in the last decade. Changes in our lifestyles have led even young individuals to face heart-related issues,” Panda remarked.

“Key factors include inadequate exercise, heightened stress levels, and poor dietary choices. Previously, people consumed more natural foods, but today, a majority of what we eat is artificial and processed,” he elaborated.

Furthermore, the rise in cardiac cases among the young can also be attributed to the absence of symptoms, according to the cardiologist.

“Approximately 30-40 percent of individuals exhibit no symptoms—termed silent ischemia—this is particularly concerning in the youth,” he stated.

The expert emphasized the necessity for early cardiac evaluations and advocated for effective management of diabetes, blood pressure, and stress, while also recommending practices like yoga and reducing salt intake to decrease the likelihood of heart disease.

Point of View
