Chennai, Sep 29 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President, K. Selvaperunthagai, has urged political figures to transcend partisan divides and concentrate on providing assistance to the families impacted by the tragic stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur. Speaking to the press at Chennai airport prior to his departure to the affected area, he expressed that it was "deeply distressing" to see some leaders exploit this tragedy for political gain.
"When 41 lives have been lost, how can anyone focus on politics? This is a moment for mourning, not for assigning blame," Selvaperunthagai emphasized, calling on parties to unite and aid the survivors and grieving families rather than engaging in accusations.
The rally on September 27 at Velayuthampalayam in Karur turned catastrophic as thousands surged forward following Vijay's speech. The ensuing crowd crush resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals, including women and children, with over 60 others injured and many still receiving hospital treatment.
Selvaperunthagai commended Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for his rapid response in managing the situation, stating, "The Chief Minister acted swiftly—establishing a judicial commission of inquiry, mobilizing medical personnel from surrounding districts, and organizing relief efforts to avert further casualties."
Chief Minister Stalin, who arrived in Karur shortly after the incident, announced that the government would provide ₹10 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹2 lakh to those injured. He also expressed gratitude to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his call of solidarity.
Opposition leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami of the AIADMK criticized the DMK government for alleged security oversights and demanded accountability. However, Selvaperunthagai defended the inquiry panel led by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan, reminding that the AIADMK had previously appointed her to investigate the 2018 Thoothukudi police firing.
"If they trusted her judgment then, why question her now?" he queried.
Meanwhile, actor-politician Vijay termed the loss of life "irreparable" and declared ₹20 lakh compensation for each bereaved family and ₹2 lakh for the injured.
Selvaperunthagai rejected BJP leader K. Annamalai’s claims of political meddling, urging everyone to wait for the commission’s findings. "Every commission submits interim reports. Let’s wait for the facts before making unfounded accusations," he said, calling for dignity and compassion in public discussions.
