Chennai, Sep 30 (NationPress) Congress general secretary (organisation) K. C. Venugopal, visited Karur on Tuesday to comfort the grieving families of those who lost their lives in the tragic stampede during actor-turned-politician Vijay's rally.
“The families who have lost their loved ones are inconsolable. The entire state of Tamil Nadu and the nation are mourning. We are here to assure the victims that they are not alone; the entire country stands with them,” he stated.
The public meeting on September 27, organized by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) at Velusamypuram, became one of the most catastrophic political events in recent Tamil Nadu history.
A devastating toll of forty-one lives, including women and children, were lost, and over sixty people sustained injuries as panic and overcrowding ensued while thousands attempted to catch a glimpse of Vijay.
The overwhelming crowd led to chaos, resulting in many being trampled. Venugopal, along with AICC Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar, TNCC president K. Selvaperunthagai, CLP leader Rajesh Kumar, Karur MP Jothimani Sennimalai, and other senior Congress leaders, described the tragedy as “beyond imagination” and reiterated the party’s unwavering support for the victims.
Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who arrived in Karur shortly after the incident, expressed profound sorrow and announced immediate relief of ₹10 lakh for each family of the deceased and provided free medical treatment for the injured.
He also established a one-man judicial commission led by retired judge Arun Jagadeesan to investigate the oversights that contributed to the tragedy.
Stalin later affirmed, “We will ensure that such a horrific event never happens again.”
Opposition leader and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami termed the incident “heart-wrenching” and criticized the government for failing to implement adequate crowd management measures.
He called for a thorough and swift investigation and improved safety protocols for future political gatherings.
From the BJP-led NDA, MP and actress Hema Malini visited Karur along with a group of MPs, including Anurag Thakur and Rekha Sharma. She stated that the visit aimed to “share the grief and comprehend what went wrong.”
“Had a larger and safer venue been provided, this tragedy might have been avoided,” she noted. The TVK founder Vijay, visibly distressed, released a video message expressing that he has never endured such pain in his life.
“I refrained from visiting Karur immediately as my presence might have caused an unusual situation. I will meet the families soon,” he mentioned, expressing his willingness to face any consequences and his desire for the truth to emerge.
The Karur stampede has ignited urgent calls from across the political spectrum for stricter safety regulations and enhanced collaboration between organizers and authorities to avert another disaster.
